In the lexicon: The Kordoza Line

I like this from ProFootballTalk.com:

In the 1970s (or thereabouts), baseball types began using the term “Mendoza Line” as the point of demarcation between below-average and bad hitters. Named for either Minnie Mendoza or Mario Mendoza, it refers to a batting average of .200.
We think that NFL quarterbacks should be judged by a similar device, so [...]

“Now playing shortstop … Johnny Damon.”

The Yankees seem likely to run Gary Sheffield at first base during the playoffs, an odd move given that Sheff has never played the position before this month.
But the New York Daily News’ Bill Madden brings perspective to the situation with his latest column, noting that it would not be the oddest such case.
There [...]

Frank’s Finito

While team president Stan Kasten hasn’t made an official announcement, there’s been word leaked out of the Washington Nationals are close to telling skipper Frank Robinson that he won’t be asked back to manage the Nats in ‘07. Not that this news should shock anyone - the writing has been on the wall since [...]

No Unit? Big deal.

The New York tabs are in a lather.
“82-inch storm cloud hovers over the Yankees’ hopes for their 27th World Series title this morning,” George King writes in the New York Post.
That storm cloud comes in the form of questions regarding whether Randy Johnson will be able to make a start in the playoffs.
Here’s the silver [...]

Can you spell “irony?”

I just a commercial on ESPN for a sweatshirt company, Starter I think.
In the commercial a little girl was in a spelling bee, trying to spell a word that I won’t even attempt. She was wearing a Texas Longhorns sweatshirt.
‘Can wearing the proper college gear make anything more competitive?’ a voice-over wonders as the camera [...]

Brady Language

Jackie MacMullan wonders aloud in today’s Boston Globe something that I’ve also noticed since the season kicked off: Tom Brady appears to be mentally slumping. You can see it in his play when he succeeds and when he fails. Gone seems to be the joy and passion with which he has played the [...]

Nationals do not need Amtrak to help with injuries!

Its been a tough year for the Nationals. While injuries cannot be solely blamed for a bad year, it also hard not to notice the large quantity the Nats have incurred. By my counts, there have been 21 people that have missed a significant number of games due to injuries.
Amtrak almost helped that [...]

Might ESPN radio be fading out of DC again?
