There are things we know we know. And then there are things we knew we knew — about, say, NFL football — but really
didn’t.
Think back to August and early September…
* We knew that Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer would be one-two in the league’s quarterback rankings. But we did not foresee that come mid-October neither would be in a top five that includes David Carr and Damon Huard at 1-2, and also has Rex Grossman.
* We knew that the NFC East was a powerhouse, with three super (or perhaps even Super) teams dueling it out. But we did not know that at the quarter-mark, the forgotten Eagles would be ruling the roost.
* We knew that the top fantasy football WR would come from the mega-elite group that includes Steve Smith, Torry Holt and Chad Johnson. But what we missed is that entering Week Six, Greg Jennings and Bernard Berrian are the top-scoring fantasy WRs (in my league anyway) followed closely by Andre Johnson. (Berrian and Johnson are numbers three and four in receiving yardage in the NFL, to boot.)
* We knew that Larry Johnson would run away (as it were) with the NFL rushing title — the only question being whether he would crack 2 Gs. We missed the fact that after five weeks of football Steven Jackson and Frank Gore would be tied for the league rushing lead (though rumors persist that if Gore pulls ahead, the U.S. Supreme Court would award the title to Reggie Bush).
* We knew that the Oakland Raiders would be bad. And, well, even stopped dogs’ asses are right twice a day.

Mmmmm… stopped-up dog’s asses.
I will take only exception with the NFC East known knowns, as I said before the season that I thought the Eagles were the 2nd best team in the division and that the Redskins would likely finish last. But, as anyone who looks at any of my fantasy teams’ rosters can attest, it’s about the only thing I did predict right.

You were in a minority on that. Most of the sports “experts” were talking about the Eagles as an afterthought.
