This article could be titled “How to render Willis McGahee and Brandon Jacobs fairly worthless on fantasy football draft day”. 20 carries for Jacobs and 15 carries for the other guy? Yuck.
This article could also be titled “Why NFL tampering rules are a joke.”
I think it was pretty obvious that Coughlin doesn’t have a lot of faith in Jacobs after some fumbles in key situations over the past two years.
Sweeeeet. Like Reese said, you gotta have two backs in the NFL these days. If for no other reason than injury (even week-to-week, let alone IR) protection. While I do think that Jacobs is the “heir apparent” to Tiki, he’s young, still developing, and had a whopping 96 carries this season - his 2nd in the Niffle. To go from 96 to 300+ in one year is a lot to ask. And the Gmen don’t have a viable backup right now. They cut Chad Morton (an injured, sh!tty return guy at best, anyway), and Derrick Ward “might” get a tender as a restricted FA. Ward played in only 8 games last year (IR - foot injury), and had ZERO carries. As a Giants fan, I very much welcome a “1B” type backup for Jacobs.
As for Dave’s comment, I don’t know that I agree that it’s “obvious” Coughlin lost faith in Jacobs. When you have Tiki, who’s shown he can do everything, including conquer his fumblitis, and was running great late in the season, why use Jacobs as anything but a change-of-pace, or to spell Tiki? He did get almost 100 carries, and scored 9 TDs.
It’s not like he was in the doghouse. If you look at Jacob’s game log, there’s an almost direct correlation between high # of carries in Gmen’s wins and/or close games, vs. a low # of carries in losses. I think it’s more a factor of the Giants (in general) abandoning the run when they get behind - as most NFL teams tend to do - than Jacobs getting specifically benched. Also, given that Jacobs isn’t used as a receiver too often (a whopping 11 rec this season), it’s not like he’s gonna play on 3rd downs a whole lot, or in single-back, multi-WR sets - as Tiki would.
If the Giants get Willis or TJ, i could see them becoming the 1a (and Brandon the 1b), anyway, given their experience and type of player each is. If it’s Turner, or some other unproven non-starter, then it may be more of a toss-up, or Jacob’s job to lose in competition. Either way, as a Giants fan, I applaud the effort at a move here. And NOT giving up the farm (again, ala Eli) to do it!
Sucks for Klank - and every other Jacobs-owning fantasy owner, however.
