“Upsets” and the vagaries of Vegas

Last week I got into a flap with my favorite SIMP antagonist over the accuracy of his use of the term “upset” to describe #2 BC’s win over #8 Virginia Tech. My favorite SIMP webmaster agreed with his “minority opinion” use of the term. I sided with the majority including the New York [...]

More on why it is better to be a college team in a city that’s a serious sports town than to be the big fish in the middle of nowhere …

The new Reebok ad featuring the Red Sox, the Patriots, the Bruins the Celtics, a Heisman Trophy Winner, a Stanley Cup champ and the Boston College Eagles. (not sure we get style points for the mumbling mayor and Donnie Wahlberg), set to music by the Dropkick Murphys. Until NYU fields a 1-A football team [...]

So, where to A-Rod?

Where does America’s most underachieving star athlete land?  Only time, and a LOT of money, will tell.  But here is my guess at the probabilities of every team:
Anaheim          25%
Chicago Cubs   20%
San Francisco    12%
Yankees            7%
Boston             6%
Mets, Philadelphia  4% each
White Sox, Detroit, Milwaukee 3% each
Cleveland, Florida, San Diego  2% each
Toronto, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Atlanta, St. Louis, Arizona, Houston  [...]

A-Rod is a LOSER

I have gone on the record many, many times, but I want to do it one last time this morning.
The Boston Red Sox should absolutely, under no circumstances, even think about making an offer to Alex Rodriguez.
Alex Rodriguez stands for everything the Red Sox are not.  He will end this budding dynasty before it even [...]

The Numbers

The Red Sox didn’t just win their second championship in 4 years.  That alone would be an amazing accomplishment.  But let’s look deeper:
-The Red Sox have been to the LCS 3 times in 5 years.
-They have gone 28-15 in the post-season since John Henry, Theo Epstein. Larry Luchino, etc took over, winning 7 out of [...]

Nice throw-in

When the Red Sox traded Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez to the Florida Marlins in the 2005 off-season for pitcher Josh Beckett, the Marlins required that Boston take the higher-paid 3B Mike Lowell in the deal as well.  At the time, many Red Sox fans (this one included) bemoaned the inclusion and wondered where we’d [...]

These are the good old days…

I have to say, I didn’t have the same emotional investment this post season as I did in 2004. I don’t think any Red Sox fan could - 2004 was a thing of legend. But seeing the Red Sox celebrating on the field, I feel remarkably like I did when the Sox won [...]

Year of FCS?

For I believe the 5th time this year, a FCS (formerly Division I-AA) team, has upset a FBS (I-A) team. Appalachian State set the tone early with their win over Michigan. This weekend, my Alma Mater, University of Delaware Fighting Blue Hens traveled to Navy and won 59-52.
Yes, this is the Navy that [...]

Marine Corps Marathon

I had the opportunity this morning to walk down the street and watch tens of thousands of people run past about the 12.5 mile point of the 2007 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. Its quite an amazing experience, just watching. I can’t imagine running in it (particularly as I really dislike running.) [...]

Are the Red Sox the New Yankees?

The Red Sox haven’t won the World Series yet, but it is looking pretty inevitable.  (For the record, it would be great to be wrong on this statement later…)
In the Washington Post “Nationals Journal” today, Barry Svrluga asked the following question:  “Considering what you know about the team and the way this series is playing [...]
