The Hatfields and the McCoys . . .

Ho-hum, just another March starting off with the Sox and Yanks upping the verbal ante.
One week after Sox GM Theo Epstein called Mike Mussina a “Bad Apple” for complaining about the Yankees beginning the 2004 season in Japan, and Mussina’s subsequent retort, we get this today from the L’il Boss, Hank Steinbrenner:
“Red Sox Nation?” What a [...]

The NFL’s Salary … Floor?

Yep, that’s right: Some NFL teams have scrambled to get under the salary cap before the new financial season starts at midnight. But at least one team has to, over the next few months, scramble to get back above the league’s salary floor.
From TSN:
Somehow, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have finagled more than $44 million in [...]

Two men enter…

…and one man leaves, likely via trade if you read the tea leaves in this Barry Svrluga piece on National’s 1B Nick Johnson in today’s Washington Post.  The other man in that situation is of course 1B Dmitri Young, who had a fantastic season for the Nationals and was signed to a 2-year contract extension [...]

Umm. Is that legal?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that NFL teams are supposed to speak to pending free agents while they’re still, you know, pending. Because until free agency actually starts, they’re still under contract with another team.
With that in mind, I commend your attention to Newsday’s Jets blog:
No, he’s not here yet. But [...]

When good coaches go bad

There are certain classic mistakes that NFL head coaches make that often lead to their becoming ex-coaches. The Jets’ Eric Mangini is making one of them.
I like Mangini and am still optimistic about his ultimate success. But … good coaches adjust their schemes to fit their personnel. The reason is simple: Changing personnel to fit [...]

Duh.

I’ve long been befuddled by the propensity among those involved in Major League Baseball and those who watch it professionally to throw up their hands and say that there’s no test for Human Growth Hormone.
There is a test, of course, but it involves blood rather than urine. I’m no fan of needles, but please, baseball [...]

Are the Sox done?

Will the Champs make any more moves before opening day?
So the Red Sox actually signed Bartolo “El Guapo Dos” Colon to a minor league deal over the weekend.
Now this from the Boston Herald:
The Red Sox may continue to say all of the right things about Coco Crisp, but don’t fall for it. As the Sox’ [...]

Rival.com’s “underachieving” and “overachieving” college football lists

From the list of overachievers: #2 Boston College, which isn’t located in a prime recruiting area, is in a colder climate than any of the other teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference and has high academic and admission standards. But it has at least eight victories in each of the past five seasons…. We [...]

Looks like Jim O’Brien won…

Friar “Cruiser” Mike mentioned Jim O’Brien in his list of possible next coaches at Providence. Here’s the latest from SI.com: The Ohio Supreme Court declined to hear Ohio State’s appeal of the case it lost against former coach Jim O’Brien, who stands to gain $2.7 million to $3 million from the university. O’Brien, [...]

Hank Steinbrenner should shut up…

Hank has come out and claimed that football has a bigger steroid problem than baseball. “Everybody that knows sports knows football is tailor-made for performance-enhancing drugs. I don’t know how they managed to skate by. It irritates me. Don’t tell me it’s not more prevalent. The number in football is at least twice as [...]
