It appears my first choice, Travis Ford, could be the lead candidate at Providence.
This hinges in part on whether Billy Gillespie ends up leaving Ford’s alma mater of Kentucky for the vacant Oklahoma State job.
Ford’s hiring, while most likely another “stepping stone” situation like Pitino, Barnes, or Gillen, would go a long way to erasing fan and alumni frustration over the past 2-3 seasons and the “keystone kop” coaching search. It would also, in my opinion, be exactly what the struggling program needs to regain momentum and national credibility.

Let me clarify my opinion as the title of my post may have been a bit misleading and sounds quite presumptuous.
I DO NOT think Providence will pony up what it takes to get this guy. I think he wants to take UMass back to where they were under Calipari before he departs and I think Providence is not much more than a lateral move at this point in the two program’s histories.
Ford said he wants to stay at UMass and I actually think he does.
That all being said, I really, really, really hope we get him.
Hmm, things appear to be heating up.
In my opinion, this would be a major coup. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
