This evening the Boston College Eagles defeated the Fighting “Irish” of L’Université du Notre Dame du Lac to win the Men’s Ice Hockey National Championship. This would be the second time in the past two decades that BC has won the national championship in hockey, and the second time in the past two decades that the Eagles have deprived the “Irish” of a national championship. The last time it was in football, a sport in which ND was prominent mostly in the pre-war era and in which in the post-war era a former BC coach led them to a few more championshps, and now in a sport in which Boston College has been clearly prominent for decades.
Go Eagles. National prominence and NOT in a cow pasture.

Ok, ok, I anticipate another Cruiser bitch session about my alleged obsession with Notre Dame, but get a load of this. I went to their website to read about their upset of Michigan in the semi-finals, and ON THEIR SPORTS WEBESITE I came across this pseudo-theological financial-pitch gem that pretty much sums up my disdain for the place:
Notre Dame, Our Mother: “I can’t think of a better way of honoring the Mother of God than to contribute so that her sons and daughters may server others” Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh C.S.C (much-loved former president of Notre Dame, standing in a Catholic church sanctuary with sturdents in front of an altar and tabernacle).
I think they should have bumper stickers “Give to Notre Dame. Make Mary happy!” Whey don’t they just sell indulgences?

Congratulations to the Eagles on their championship - while they did knock my parents alma mater out in the Hockey East title game, I still like seeing the NCAA hockey crown back in New England. It does not belong in Indiana.
As for Crusier, I am pretty certain he only roots for the ND football team. He doesn’t care a lick about the Irish basketball team (Providence and UConn), so I doubt he cares about a non-revenue sport like hockey either.
Which of the following is more gratifying?
1) BC winning a championship
2) BC losing in the championship, but having knocked out ND in the quarterfinals.
BTW - Can’t wait until next year when the Frozen Four is in DC. Hopefully I’ll win the NCAA ticket lottery…
Oooo - I had no idea it was coming here. If UVM is in it (long shot) I’d love to see that.

Scott, I am pretty sure Hockey is a revenue sport when you are at the elite levels. It’s covered by regional sports networks and the final was on ESPN in prime time on Thursday and Saturday evenings.
As for Friar Mike, hey, it’s still good fun to toy with the Irish. The coverage was full of all these disbelieving “but the Irish can’t lose’ stories, and whining about the disallowed goal when an ND player kicked the puck in — clearly they don’t know much about hockey.
Anyway, this was my favorite line in the coverage: “This is a start,” Notre Dame senior captain Mark Van Guilder said. “We’re trying to build this program into what they (Boston College) have. We want to be like the Boston Colleges, the Michigans, the Minnesotas, the teams that come to mind when you think of hockey. I’m proud we’ve started that.”
