ESPN’s trade blog is reporting that the Yankees-Mariners talks over Jarrod Washburn. The Ms want the Yanks to take the contract but also give up a solid prospect. Cashman should stick by his guns — the Yankees don’t necessarily need Washburn. They can replace Rasner or Ponson with Ian Kennedy or someone like Aceves.

For those of us who don’t pay real close attention to the AL East (but are watching the ESPN Sun Night game right now)…
When did the Yanks pick up Ponson and Sexon? And more to the point: why??
And is Matsui out for the year? I recall his getting hurt (awhile back?), but wonder about the timing/need for Nady.
Ponson and Sexson — over the last few weeks; why? Because Ponson was better than whomever the number five started was and Sexson because the Yankees were hitting like .150 against lefties.
Matsui is likely out for the year but could still return in Sept.
ok, thanks… but isn’t Sexon hitting like .150 against EVERYONE? Greaseambi can’t be THAT bad!
And man - just looked at Ponson’s stats. He’s been pretty awful since he donned the pinstripes this go-round. Guess both his problems AND his skills stayed behind in Texas!
Dead Sexyson though has been a major masher before and when a guy like that is out there and you are rolling the dice, why not give him a try?
And as Rob pointed out, Sir Sidney was a better gamble than what the Yankees had.
Really, it’s all about rolling the dice and trying to stay competitive until the pieces that got hurt come back. Low-cost, high-upside, low-risk additions. It’s not a bad idea - better than trading away the farm for guys who might not do much better than Ponson or Sexson.
Also, if you look at his splits, Sexy was hitting well against lefties. (Though in a relatively small sample.)
Yeah, i get that (high-upside/low-risk vs. a trade). Worth a shot, at least, esp. with the Yankees payroll. I don’t know about “low-cost” however: were either waiver pickups, or were they both vet-minimum FAs? I presume Sexson had a pretty big contract in Seattle…. [I do presume, tho, that Ponson was making some sort of non-guaranteed, minorleague min contract, given his history]
