The first 2 weeks of the college season are usually a snoozefest, and rest assured, that is intentional. Big time programs like Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Florida intentionally schedule creampuff opponents from lesser conferences or divisions to act as revenue-creating home games that are little more than organized scrimmages. There are/were, of course, exceptions such as the matchup between Clemson and Alabama, as well as Missouri and Illinois, but the real fun starts in week 3.
Anyway, here is what we did learn after 1 week of college football:
The Poll:
1. USC (previously 1) - The Trojans looked deadly efficient in their 52-7 throttling of Virginia in Charlottesville. What’s more impressive, unlike the rest of the top-5, they went on a true road game AND played a BCS opponent that won 9 games last year. The defense appears to have 11 NFL-caliber players and QB Mark Sanchez looks like the next great SC quarterback.
2. Oklahoma (2) - Oklahoma has fantastic offensive linemen, runningbacks, and a quarterback and their defense looks much quicker than the one that was embarassed by WVU in the Fiesta Bowl. Their depth and schedule should keep them at or near the top all year.
3. Florida (3) - Harvin’s injury concerns me, especially heading into a rivalry game against Miami.
4. Missouri (6) -Missouri’s offense, led by Jeremy Maclin and Chase Daniel, looked national championship good against Illinois. But is their defense that bad to give up 42 points?
5. Georgia (7) - UGA may be the most talented team in America on paper, but their schedule and injury concerns spell trouble on the horizon.
6. Ohio State (4) - If RB Beanie Wells is 80% or less in 2 weeks, they have no chance against USC in LA.
7. Auburn (9)
8. Texas (11) - The Horns crushed a very underrated FAU team.
9. LSU (10)
10. Alabama (NR) - Their crushing victory over Clemson, led by both their lines, was truly impressive.
11. WVU (8)
12. Penn State (15)
13. Cal (13)
14. Texas Tech (12)
15. South Florida (16)
16. BYU (17)
17. Wake Forest (24) - The Deacons are the best team in a historically bad conference.
18. South Carolina (NR)
19. Wisconsin (20)
20. Oregon (NR) - The Ducks easily dispatched rival UW with a 3rd-string QB.
21. Arizona State (18)
22. Fresno State (NR)
23. Clemson (4) - What a disappointment! Clemson had the look of a championship contender, but they got pushed around by the Tide in a game they were heavily favored to win.
24. Utah (25)
25. Notre Dame (23) - 1st glimpse this Saturday against SDSU. Anything less than 200 yards rushing a 20+ point victory would be a sign of another disappointing season.
Honorable Mentions: Arizona, Kansas, MSU, Oklahoma State, Ball State, Tulsa, Kansas State, Georgia Tech, East Carolina
Conference Rankings:
1. SEC - To quote the mortgage guy, It’s the biggest no-brainer in the history of Earth.”
2. Big XII - The B12 is deep, but not yet as good as the SEC, and their lack of defense reminds me of the 1980s Pac-10.
3. Pac-10 - This league will be very good w/ USC and Oreg, and even UCLA and Cal surprised in week 1.
4. Big Ten - OSU drops with any sustained Wells injury, and PSU and Wisc still have a lot of questions.
5. Big East - The BEast will take a step back this year, although WVU and USF may be top-10 teams when its over.
6. ACC - This conference is inarguably the worst BCS conference EVER. They are 0-8 in their last 8 BCS games, their bowl record is atrocious over that span, as is their out-of-conference record, and not one of the thier teams has seriously threatened for a national championship since the Florida State run of the 1990s. This is NOT what Miami, BC, and Tech had in mind when they left the Big East for supposedly greener pastures of football money.
