The Cash-man does not cometh to DC. He’s staying with the Yankees for at least three more years, saying that he still has a “job to finish here.

  • I kind of expected this to happen, though I did hold out hope that there might be a way we could land a more competent GM than the one we’re currently saddled with.

  • Agreed. Although, after reading lots about the Nats leadership (incl. this EXCELLENT piece http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/28/AR2008092802361.html) about the Learners, Kasten and Bowden - it seems to me that Bowden is hamstrung by the ownership in what he can do at the major league level. I DO think there’s been substantial progress in the minors, but that progress is already taking too long to get to - and there’s been TOO much of a regression at - the big club in the meantime.

  • I think there are two litmus tests upcoming in the next 6 to 9 months for Nats ownership.

#1 - making a (or a number of) significant move(s) this off-season to help the major league club, whether thru trade (ala Milledge and Dukes) or thru free agent signing(s) (ala NO ONE from last year) - They need to do infinitely better than LoDuca, Estrada and Mackowiak, and I’d like to see a better effort than a 25th man/utility player (Willie Harris) or 5th starter (Odalis Perez) as the top FA signees. Those are the guys you get to round out an already competitive team, not begin to make one.

#2 - They must - MUST - draft signable players AND SIGN THEM at both the #1 and #9a picks in the 2009 draft. After missing on Aaron Crow (at #9 in ‘08) who may have been major-league ready in less than 3 years, there’s a lot to make up for.

We need the cavalry in DC, and it needs to come DAMN QUICKLY. I think, at this point, only these major improvements (or a Duke Men’s Bball National Championship run) will satisfy me come next Spring!
