There is a great article about Tom Coughlin in USA Today.
In it, Lou Holtz recalls “”All the fans and all the media were talking about games in the past,” Holtz said on the telephone this week. “I was scared to death of Boston College. You could tell Tom Coughlin was a tough coach. I remember [...]

Cause, you know, we need more people talking ’bout sports.

There will only be an NCAA 1-A playoff if it doesn’t disrupt the bowl system
The NCAA reports that TV ratings for bowl games — even the pre-Christmas bowls — were higher than ever this year.
“With more than 1.7 million combined fans attending a bowl game and close to another combined 129 million households tuning in to watch the bowl games on television, bowl payouts ran an estimated $225 [...]
I like it when Eagles soar…
So it looks like Tom Coughlin (Boston College Quarterbacks Coach 1980-83, Head Coach 1991-93) is taking his New York Giants to the Super Bowl to face the New England Patriots.
While I am a New Englander, I would like to see Coach Coughlin, Chris Snee, Mathias Kiwanuka, and Zak DeOssie (ok he went to Brown, but [...]
Here I go again…
From USA Today’s op-ed page on the eve of the OSU-LSU BCS championship…
“At Ohio State, only 53% of the football players who entered college on scholarships from 1997 through 2000 graduated within six years. LSU graduated only 51%. They are not the worst among the 10 universities represented in this year’s top bowls. The universities [...]
Another reason — more serious than sports — why it was smart for BC to move to the ACC and why Syracuse should have jumped at the chance
As northeastern populations decline, schools without a national reputation are finding that the number of applicants is diminishing. While both BC and SU have national bases already, in the three years since joining the ACC, applications to BC from the southeast, where the population is growing, have increased dramatically.
The Boston Globe reports: “Prominent [...]
Maybe Duke got the message…
David Glenn of WRAL Durham reports that multiple sources at Duke and in the college coaching community have confirmed that Ted Roof’s last game as the head coach of the Blue Devils (1-10) will be Saturday in their season finale at North Carolina (3-8). “Duke football desperately needs a fresh start,” one source said. “There [...]
Duke, ND, and the ACC
“We were beaten by the best quarterback in the nation.” Clemson coach Tommy Bowden
I am taking a page out of Mike’s book to bitch about ACC football. BC beat Clemson last night, and locked up a trip to the ACC title game. (Rooting for the Cavs to make it.) However, earlier in the [...]
Red all over
The Maryland game was disappointing, obviously, but there was another area where the Terps won on all counts. Their fans were very good at thowing hot dogs at the Jesuit who travels with the team. Pelting the visiting band during the national anthem was a nice touch also. A real class act.
The adult fans [...]
“You’re OUT”, no, on further review “SAFE!”
Sports Illustrated reported on Thursday that Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman will support instant replay in baseball next season. This morning, ESPN reported that at their meetings in Orlando, Fla., next week, major league GMs will recommend using television replay to commissioner Bud Selig and owners.
More on that “pedestrian” defense…
Former Ohio State Buckeye and Minnesota Viking Robert Smith, arguably among the more intellectual players with an NCAA 1-A and NFL resumé, and now of ESPN’s “College Football Live Weekend Picks” has, like many others this weekend, selected #2 Boston College over Florida State. That isn’t so interesting, but his reason is worth posting here [...]
