Unquestionably, the Fighting Irish still have the best team in NCAA Division 1.  (Not the football team, of course, which collapsed against #104 (of 119) Syracuse today.) The greatest public relations team in college sports appears to be first-and-goal. Using the remarkable coast-to-coast legion of deluded but loyal fans built up with decades of marketing, a team whose only victory over a winning squad was last week last week over Navy is still pitching the possibilities of a New Years Day bowl game. Mark Blaudschun of the Boston Globe hit the nail on the head: It’s Time Notre Dame Earned It

Would someone please explain the fascination with AJ Burnett? Do Brian Cashman and Theo Epstein not realize that “Burnett” is Canadian for “Pavano”?

My favorite part of these stories is where writers say that a fifth year on a Burnett contract might be risky because of his injury history … as if the second, third and fourth years on the contract would be safe.

My take: The Sox are just trying to drive up the Yankees’ price while they sign the more dependable Derek Lowe.

Boston College joins Michigan and Southern California in the ranks of schools that have shut out Notre Dame under Coach Charlie Weis.

This evens up the all-time series between the only two universities of Roman persuasion playing FBS football (or as the Domers see it, between the only Catholic school playing FBS football and the only Jesuit school playing FBS football) with BC winning the last six. And the Frank Leahy Memorial Bowl stays in the Chestnut Hill trophy case where it has been since 2001.

Just for the record, the officials were from the Big East.

Where’s Greenberg to report on Lute Olson’s apparent retirement when you need him??  I hope when Coach K goes at Duke, it’s not this sudden and shocking.  U of A’s program is an absolute MESS right now.  This can’t help….
