Idiotic penalty

In a league whose rules provide for any number of idiotic (as in “what idiot thought this up?”) penalties, I give you the one just called against Jets LB Jonathan Vilma: roughing the quarterback for landing with his full body weight on the quarterback. (Vilma had blitzed and hit Jags QB Byron Leftwich just as he threw the ball.)

You’re not allowed to land on the quarterback if you tackle him straight on? Or is it that you can land on the quarterback, but you have to mystically cause some of your body weight to go elsewhere?

UPDATE: The Jets just hit Leftwich for a safety … only to have it called back on another roughing the passer penalty, this for helmet-to-helmet contact. Except that replays showed (a) there was no helmet-to-helmet contact and (b) a Jets defensive player was being held.

There are way too many “protect the quarterback” rules in the NFL today. I also don’t like the 5-yard no-contact rules for cornerbacks. This is a contact sport, not pairs ice skating.
