College Football FINAL Regular Season Roundup

The final week of college football’s regular season exemplified the entire year. The #2 team lost to an unranked opponent AGAIN.  A top-5 team lost to an unranked opponent a record 16 times in 2007, making it the most upset-ing college football season of all time.
For almost a week now, we’ve all heard the cries [...]

What is a rivalry?

Sparta and Athens . . . The Capulets and the Montagues . . . Lincoln and Douglas . . . The Sox and Yanks
What is a rivalry?
One dictionary defines rivalry as, “a competitive or antagonistic state or condition.”  But in sports, a rivalry means so much more, especially to the fans.  Perhaps no sport thrives [...]

Brief Week 13 College Football Review

The #2 in America is 2-6 since October 1.  Let that sink in for a second.
It happened again on Saturday night when the feel-good story of 2007 ended with Mizzou’s win over #2 Kansas in Arrowhead Stadium during the “Border War.”
The talking heads will tell you this is the year of parity and point out [...]

Brief Week 12 College Football Review

11!
11 times this year a top-5 team lost to an unranked team.  The previous high for a season was 8, and there are still two weeks left.  The last two major upsets happened over the last 4 days as #2 Oregon and #3 Oklahoma went down to unranked teams, opening the door for teams like [...]

-Most of the temporary pretenders (UConn, USF, BC, Ohio State, Michigan, Arkansas) have been knocked off their high perch, leaving what appears to FINALLY be [...]

Brief Week 10 College Football Roundup

The craziest year in college football continued on Saturday.
-Notre Dame lost to Navy for the first time in 44 years.  Congrats to the gutty Navy players, but the bigger story is ND Coach Charlie Weis finally “losing the crowd.”  The ND football program is now at an all-time low, and regardless of whose fault it [...]

Notre Dame’s Saratoga

This Saturday, Notre Dame plays Navy in South Bend.  At 1-7, the Irish are 3 point favorites at home against the Middies who they have beaten each of the last 43 seasons, going back to the Roger Staubach-led 1963 Navy team’s victory.

This game means much more than the sustainment or end of the longest winning [...]

Brief Week 9 College Football Roundup

Another topsy-turvy week on the college gridiron.  No MAJOR upsets, several small ones like BC over V-Tech on a Thursday night in Blacksburg or Kentucky going down to Mississippi State.  On to my rankings:
1. Ohio State
2. LSU
3. Oregon
4. BC
5. Oklahoma

Not a Pretty Picture

USA Today re-ordered its Coach’s poll from the first week in October according to graduation success rate for classes entering 1997-2000. It’s not a pretty picture. Only eight of the top 25 football programs had graduation rates above the national average of 67%. The ACC topped this list with three (BC, Clemson, VaTech), [...]
